Is Kava Kosher?

“Kosher” refers to foods and drinks that meet the dietary standards of Jewish law. To be kosher, something must come from an approved source, be prepared in a certain way, and remain free from cross-contamination with non-kosher ingredients. At its heart, kosher eating is about purity, care, and intention.

What is kava?

Kava is a natural root drink that has been shared for centuries across the Pacific Islands. Traditionally, the root is ground or pounded, mixed with water, and strained to create a tea-like beverage known for its relaxing effects and long-term health benefits. It’s the national drink of Fiji and remains central to many Pacific Island cultures. Kava on it’s own is completely plant-based, with no alcohol, sugar, or additives: just the pure root. Many describe it as a social drink and superfood that tangibly promotes relaxation and connection without intoxication.

So, is kava kosher?

Kava’s natural simplicity and purity align closely with what many people associate with kosher preparation. The way kava is generally made across the Pacific Islands, as well as in many kava bars throughout the United States, avoids processes that could complicate kosher classification, such as fermentation or mixing with non-plant ingredients. In that sense, kava naturally fits within many kosher principles.

At the time of writing, there is no official rabbinical ruling on kava’s kosher status. Those who observe kosher dietary laws may wish to consult their rabbinic authority, particularly regarding commercially prepared kava products. Some kava brands have received kosher certification.

Is Kavahana’s Kava Kosher?

At Kavahana, our signature Kava Nectar follows the same principle of purity. It is made from noble kava cultivars grown in the South Pacific and cold-pressed to preserve the root’s natural compounds. Guests at our Santa Monica café (📍306 Pico Blvd, Santa Monica, CA 90405) often describe it as grounding and uplifting, a way to relax and connect without losing clarity.

Kava Nectar does not currently hold kosher certification, though we plan to pursue certification in the future. Its ingredients and preparation process already align closely with kosher standards. It is simple, plant-based, and free from additives. While only a rabbi can make a definitive ruling, the nature of kava fits comfortably within the spirit of kosher values.
