What is Kava Anyways?

Why trying Kava Nectar is a great introduction to drinking kava

So you’ve started to hear the word “kava” floating around. Maybe your friends have tried it. Or perhaps some of your colleagues have started using it at work. It sounds interesting… a drink that helps you relax like alcohol without the hangover? Sounds great, right? Especially when there is a form of it, like Kava Nectar, that makes it easy to try.

But what is it, exactly?

Kava is a drink from the islands of the South Pacific. It’s made from the dried roots of the kava plant (part of the pepper family), then ground into a powder that is made into a tea-like form. The islands have enjoyed it for centuries for religious and cultural ceremonies and for its health benefits.

There is a rich tradition behind drinking kava and many islands still use it as a way to honor guests visiting their countries and as a way to start meetings and discussions in the community. What you’ve probably heard most about kava are the effects it has on your mind and body. Kava promotes feeling happy and social while keeping your mind calm and focused. Many think these effects are similar to alcohol, but it’s non-addictive and doesn’t leave you with a hangover. You can read more about that here.

How is kava made, you ask?

Traditionally, kava is made by taking the dried root powder, putting it into a strainer bag or cheese cloth, and massaging it in warm water to steep out all of the active ingredients. These are called kavalactones and are what give kava its effects. You can also find instant kava, or dehydrated kava juice, like our Kava Nectar. This is a great way to try kava as it only involves adding water or your favorite non-alcoholic beverage and it’s ready to drink. It contains all the same ingredients and benefits of traditional kava.

Kava Nectar is made only with dried root juice from the kava plant grown in Hawaii and the South Pacific. Like strong matcha, it has an earthy taste and can be mixed with coconut milk for added creaminess and flavor.

Kava Nectar is a great introduction if you are curious about kava and don’t know where to start. You can get yours here!

Enjoy!
